Role mandate.
Maintain accurate product costs, inventory values, manufacturing variances, and cost data so the company can control plant performance and make informed commercial and operational decisions.
Job Purpose
The Cost Accountant supports the integrity of the company manufacturing-cost information. The role maintains standard and actual costs, completes cost-accounting activities during period close, reconciles inventory and production balances, analyzes operational variances, supports stock counts, and provides clear insight into product, process, and margin performance. The position works closely with Accounting, Production, Supply Chain, Warehousing, Procurement, Sales, Engineering, and IT.
Key Responsibilities
Product Costing and Cost Standards
• Calculate and maintain product costs covering raw materials, packaging, direct labor, utilities, production overhead, work in progress, finished goods, by-products, scrap, and production losses, as applicable.
• Maintain standard costs, cost centers, allocation bases, overhead rates, bills of material, routings, recipes, and other approved costing assumptions in coordination with operational owners.
• Review new or modified products, formulations, packaging configurations, production processes, and sourcing changes to ensure timely and accurate costing before implementation. • Support actual, standard, process, batch, and job-costing requirements according to the company approved accounting policies and ERP design.
• Validate the accounting treatment of normal and abnormal loss, rework, off-specification output, scrap, waste, and by-products where relevant to plant operations.
Period Close and Cost Reconciliation
• Complete assigned monthly and annual cost-accounting activities within the approved close timetable, including production-order settlement, overhead absorption, inventory valuation, and variance postings.
• Reconcile inventory, work-in-progress, production, consumption, overhead, purchase-price, and cost-of-sales balances between the ERP subledgers, operational records, and general ledger. • Investigate unexplained or unusual balances, negative stock, inactive production orders, abnormal movements, interface errors, and unsupported manual adjustments, and ensure timely correction.
• Prepare complete working papers, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting evidence for management review, internal control, external audit, and statutory requirements.
Manufacturing Variance and Performance Analysis
• Analyze material price, usage, mix, yield, labor, energy, overhead, efficiency, volume, and production variances against standard cost, budget, forecast, and prior periods.
• Work with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Procurement to identify the operational causes of unfavorable variances and monitor agreed corrective actions.
• Prepare cost and margin reports by product, product family, batch, production line, cost center, customer, or channel where reliable data is available.
• Identify cost trends, loss drivers, low-margin products, abnormal consumption, inefficient resource use, and other opportunities for cost reduction or profitability improvement.
Inventory Valuation and Stock Control
• Support cycle counts and annual physical inventories across raw materials, packaging, spare parts, work in progress, finished goods, and other relevant stock categories.
• Investigate book-to-physical differences, validate approved inventory adjustments, and help strengthen controls over receipts, issues, transfers, returns, production consumption, and finished-goods reporting.
• Monitor slow-moving, obsolete, damaged, expired, contaminated, and off-specification items and prepare appropriate valuation or provision analysis in accordance with approved policy.
• Review inventory valuation, net realizable value, landed cost, purchase-price differences, and other cost components for accuracy and consistency.
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Decision Support
• Support annual manufacturing budgets and periodic forecasts by providing cost assumptions, historical trends, production-volume data, overhead rates, inventory information, and expected price changes.
• Prepare cost simulations and financial analysis for pricing, sourcing, make-or-buy, process changes, product introductions, capital expenditure, and cost-reduction initiatives.
• Track the financial impact of approved savings initiatives and distinguish sustainable cost improvements from temporary volume, price, or timing effects.
• Provide clear and timely cost-accounting reports, explanations, and recommendations to Finance and operational management.
ERP, Master Data, Controls, and Compliance
• Maintain cost-accounting master data within the ERP, including material costs, cost centers, activity rates, allocation rules, bills of material, routings, and other assigned records.
• Follow approved controls over costing changes, inventory adjustments, period opening and closing, journal entries, access rights, supporting documentation, and segregation of duties.
• Use ERP reports, spreadsheets, and analytical tools to extract, reconcile, validate, and explain financial and operational information.
• Support ERP testing, costing-model improvements, process standardization, audit requests, and corrective actions relating to inventory or manufacturing costs.
• Protect confidential product, formula, supplier, customer, pricing, cost, and commercial information in accordance with company policy.
Cross-Functional Coordination
• Coordinate professionally with Accounting, Production, Supply Chain, Procurement, Warehousing, Sales, Engineering, Quality, IT, and external auditors on costing and inventory matters.
• Participate in plant, stock-count, budgeting, closing, and performance-review activities and communicate material cost or control issues promptly.
• Promote accuracy, disciplined documentation, timely follow-up, and continuous improvement across all cost-accounting processes.
